Privacy Policy

Speech Meter never stores your recordings and never sells your data. This page explains exactly what we collect, why, and who we send it to.

Who runs this

Speech Meter is a product of AE Studio. If you have a question about your data, email justin.vencel@ae.studio.

Your recordings

When you practice a phrase, your browser records your voice and sends the audio to our server. Our server passes it straight through to Microsoft Azure AI Speech, which scores your pronunciation.

We do not store the recording. It exists in memory for the few seconds the scoring takes, and then it is gone. We never write it to a database, a log, or a file, and we never listen to it.

What we do keep

After scoring, we keep the result, not the recording. For each practice attempt, we store:

  • Your four component scores and your overall score
  • The phrase text you practiced
  • The per-word breakdown of that score
  • A timestamp
  • Your account id, if you were signed in
  • An anonymous browser id and analytics session id, so an attempt you made before signing up can be attached to your account afterwards

Your account

Sign-in is handled by Clerk, not by us. If you create an account, Clerk stores your email address and, if you use a social login, whatever that provider gives it. We read your user id and email from Clerk.

We never see or store your password.

Text you type

If you type an email into an optional field, such as the leaderboard, the waitlist, or the language request form, we store it. For the waitlist and language request forms, we also add it to our Loops mailing list.

If you write feedback, it is emailed to us. It is not stored in the app.

If you build a learning path, the goal sentence you type and your self-declared level are sent to OpenRouter, which routes them to the language model that writes your curriculum. The curriculum it generates is stored in our database so you can come back to it.

Payments

Stripe handles payments end to end. We never see or store your card number. We store which plan you bought, when it expires, and Stripe's customer and subscription ids.

Analytics and cookies

We use PostHog to see which features get used: page views and events like a score finishing, checkout starting, or a path being built. PostHog sets an analytics cookie and records your approximate location from your IP address.

Clerk sets a session cookie when you sign in. If you type an email into one of the optional fields, PostHog associates it with your session.

We do not run advertising cookies or any other third-party tracking.

Who we send data to

We use a small set of processors, and each one only gets what it needs to do its job:

  • Microsoft Azure AI Speech: your audio, for pronunciation scoring and speech synthesis
  • Clerk: your account details
  • Stripe: your payment information
  • MongoDB Atlas: our database
  • OpenRouter and the model provider behind it: your goal sentence, to write your learning path
  • PostHog: analytics events
  • Loops: your email, if you gave it to us
  • Railway: hosting for our servers

What we never do

We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers. We do not train any model on your recordings or your practice history.

Selling or brokering user data is not part of how this product makes money. It makes money from subscriptions, and that is the only business it's in.

How long we keep it

Your practice history and learning paths stay until you ask us to delete them or delete your account. Analytics data follows PostHog's own retention schedule.

Your rights

Email justin.vencel@ae.studio to get a copy of your data or have it deleted. We will respond within 30 days.

Deleting your account deletes your practice history and your progress through any learning path, automatically. Two things survive it. The generated paths themselves stay in a shared cache, because the same goal typed by two people produces one path, but nothing in that cache points back at your account once it is deleted. Records of payments stay too, because we have to be able to account for them.

If you are in the EU or UK, you have rights under GDPR to access, correct, or delete your data, and to object to how we use it. If you are a California resident, you have similar rights under the CCPA. Email us and we will handle the request directly.

Children

Speech Meter is not intended for anyone under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will tell you in the app.
